Merlin

Modern times knows him as the wizard/ magician who advised King Arthur, built Camelot and the Round Table, and got the sword Excalibur for Arthur by introducing him to the Lady of the Lake.

Ancient Welsh tradition told of a wild man of the woods called Myrddin gifted with great powers. He was around before Arthur was conceived and quite a while after he left the scene ( headed by ship to Avalon).

In addition to having his origin in the woods, Merlin met his demise there, according to the legend. He fell for a gorgeous young woman and taught her his magic. She was variously a goddess ( Lady of the Lake), or mortal (Morgan le Fay); when her magic got stronger then his, she imprisoned him in a tree.

Merlin has never been more powerfully portrayed. Having been frozen in wood just as the magical energy of the volcano was frozen in stone. Merlin emerging from Rare naio wood with fragments of stone still embedded in his cloak, emerging from their frozen state and returning to energy in potentia, ready to burst into flame again at his command.

The spirit of Merlin lives on. He lives in all of us who see his light and understand his lesson, "

Goddesses

Imagine two hundred years ago a volcano erupted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A grove of the rare Naio trees stand in its path. Fallen by the fast-flowing, molten lava- it lies asleep for over two hundred years.

Now imagine an artist today, hiking through those lava flows, discovers this long-lost grove of trees. Chipping through the hardened lava the artist rescues the sacred wood and reveals the face of Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano!

Naio is a rare, extremely hard wood, brought to Hawaii by the early Polynesians for its medicinal qualities. Highly prized and treasured by the native Hawaiians of both yesterday and today, its awakening at this time is due to an inspired artist.

The artist is Dale Zarrella, highly honored by the Hawaiian Elders for resurrecting this precious wood. He is one of the few artists to successfully incorporate the hardened lava, artfully positioned throughout the Naio wood by Mother Nature and the artist. His magnificent sculptures represent the power of Pele, her many princesses, and poetic interpretations of her legendary qualities.

Ocean Fantasy
By

Dale Zarrella

Ocean Fantasy is a playful interpretation of the legend of Kauila by artist Dale Zarrella. Zarrella is a master of graceful movement and every piece evokes the love and deep respect he has for the Hawaiian Culture, their creatures and their legends. It is the children of today, loved by the spirit of Kauila, the turtle goddess who has protected them throughout the ages, that will preserve our treasures of tomorrow-so the legend says.

The mystical turtle girl, Kauila, makes her home in the Ka’u district of the Big Island, at Punalu’u Bay. Kauila so loved the children of the Island, that she was empowered with the ability to turn herself from a turtle into a human form. She would play with the children along the shoreline and keep watch over them. The people of Ka’u loved Kauila for her guardianship of their children and also for her springs that gave them pure drinking water. Abundant tales are told, even today, of a child lost in the ocean being rescued and brought to safety by the gentle honu (green Sea turtle). Now immortalized in bronze by artist Dale Zarrella in his Ocean Fantasy series which include, First lesson 6’ life-size bronze and Playmates 22" bronze.
